There are some medicines which have been approved recently in the USA, Europe, Japan etc but not yet approved in India or any other countries. Also, some medicines are not permitted to be imported or marketed commercially in certain countries. However, they may be required for the treatment of patients who have exhausted all other available treatment options in their country. The Indian Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945, permits the patient to import these medicines in small quantities. Similar regulatory provision also exists in other countries.
